Welcome to

SEND

At St. Luke’s RC Primary School, we aim to include all children with additional needs in the mainstream setting.

Our vision is to make it possible for every child, including those with additional needs to:

  • Have access to the National Curriculum.
  • Be able to take part in all areas of school life.
  • Reach their highest possible potential.
  • Have any additional needs recognised and identified at the earliest opportunity.

We strongly believe that all teachers are teachers of children with additional needs. At classroom level teachers take responsibility for adapting the curriculum and implementing the provision and learning plans for those children who have been identified as having additional needs.

The SENCO assists with identification and is responsible for the day to day management and co-ordination of practices and resources in relation to additional needs.

A graduated approach is used:

  • Initial concerns may be raised by parents/carers, class teacher, teaching assistants, health professionals or the SENCO.
  • Concerns are shared and an initial concerns proforma is completed with the parent/carer.
  • Concerns will be monitored at home and in school.
  • A decision may then be made as to further action and this will be shared with all concerned parties. This may include:
    • close monitoring
    • assessment
    • the setting of small interim targets
    • some additional support
    • Further assessments, intervention and support may be required, at which stage the child will receive a Learning Plan or placed in provision to support their individual needs. Children will then be placed on the Special Needs Register.
    • Targets will be reviewed and decisions to involve external professionals will be made.
    • A very small number of children with exceptional additional needs may require a full assessment to be undertaken by the Education Authority. This is known as Statutory Assessment. As a result of the assessment the child may receive an Educational Health Care Plan(EHCP). An EHCP usually entitles the child to support to meet carefully specified outcomes, very occasionally, an alternative educational setting. EHCPs are formally reviewed each year at the Annual Review.

Throughout these stages parents/carers are consulted and informed. Further information is available in our Policy for Children with Special Educational Needs. The link to the Salford Local Offer information is here.
